VPI 16.5 - Record Cleaning Machine - For 78s?

I bought this machine from a friend six years ago and have used it periodically on LPs with mixed results.  It gets all the surface dirt and dust off the record, but I can never seem to get out those faint pops and crackles from the deep hidden dirt particles.  For the longest time I thought the VPI wouldn't work on 78s.  Much to my suprise and delight, it does an amazing job on shellac.  I pulled a couple of Frankie Trumbauer Brunswicks out of the stacks.  Both these records looked great after cleaning and played E+ or better.  No noise from dirt.  The VPI doesn't work miracles.  A V record is still a V record even if it's clean.  But for the E records in your collection the VPI may very well make those records sound New.

I recommend the Nitty Gritty Pure 1 record cleaning solution as well.  It's made for 78s and does no damage.  It's available at www.needledoctor.com

Nick Perls - Signed Letter of Correspondence

It looks like my man Bill was trying to trade some records by white artists for records by black blues artists.  Is it me or does Nick's reply seem kind of hostile?

Nick Perls was the founder and main man behind the famed Yazoo record label.  If you love country blues, you probably have a Yazoo LP or CD in your collection.  Before they were bought out by Shanachie, most of the 78s Yazoo reissued came from the collections of Nick Perls and his friends and associates.

Check out the Wiki entry here:

Red Nichols and Jack Teagarden Promo Cards

Red Nichols

Jack Teagarden

These seem to be some kind of promtional post cards from the 30s or 40s.

They are much sharper in appearance than the scan allows for.

Bix Promo Sign

I found this on a shelf in the large collection of Bill's.  It needed a small repair, but is in nice shape.  I don't know when this was made, but I'd guess in the 1930's

The Hot Platter Club - NJ

I never met any of these guys, but I wish I had.    I was probably around 3yrs. old when this was taken.

Bill George - Record Collector of the Highest Order

This is a caricature drawn when Bill was, I believe, a Freshman at Rutgers University, circa 1946.
Decades later, he would go on to amass a collection of 78 discs numbering over 12,000.  It's from that collection that I am pulling most of the 78s you'll see here.

Thank you Bill

(and you too Joan)

Larry Levitz - Makes the Paper (again?)

Great article and video.  I've bought shellac from both of these guys.  Combined their knowledge of antique phonographs is just ridiculous.  look 'em up.
